Practice

The key to any successful project is the assembly of an inspired and capable team that communicates very well and enjoys working together. Architectural projects are intellectually and physically challenging, but should be fun, stimulating, and rewarding. Great projects emerge from great teamwork between three interdependent but sovereign entities: the clients, the designers, and the builders.

Construction

Construction

During construction, we continue, on a fast track basis, to complete construction documents while working with the Builder. Our role is to observe the construction process to insure that the builder is complying with the intent of our drawings. We attend construction meetings, meet with subcontractors, answer questions, and provide additional information as needed by the construction team. We also review drawings and submittals by subcontractors and suppliers, which is of key importance in making sure that complex project components come out as intended.

Construction Document Preparation

Construction Document Preparation

The purpose of this phase is to create and provide the necessary documentation for both actual pricing and construction. At this point, all additional project consultants and engineers are on board. They include, but are not limited to interior designers, home integration specialists, structural and heating and cooling engineers, civil engineers, lighting designers, and landscape architects.

Design Development

Design Development

The purpose of this phase is to define and illustrate the project in detail. While the conceptual design is based on generalities, design development gets down to a host of specifics. Each element of a project is explored in depth while being integrated into the whole through more detailed plans, building sections, exterior elevations, and perspective sketches.

At this point, it is advisable to determine construction budgets with builder candidates. Also, any regulatory issues or processes should be addressed and in the process of resolution.

Conceptual Design

Conceptual Design

The goal of this phase is to establish a design direction in relation to a project’s scope, character, and probable cost.

We begin the process by developing, along with the client, a clearer and more precise understanding of their needs and desires. A key step is illustrating, and then evaluating, at the conceptual level, the range of possibilities and strategies that shall serve the project best. The resulting ideas are then presented through diagrammatic plans, elevations, 3D computer models, and perspective sketches.

Builder Selection

Builder Selection

Builders should be selected as early as possible, as they are important players in identifying costs in relation to scope in the design process. As soon as there is enough information to define scope, quality, and complexity of the project, builders can submit proposals on cost, their methodology, and schedule. Individual builders have different approaches to management and cost control while also ranging in levels of skill and ability.

Meetings & Communications

Meetings & Communications

Good communication is critical to the design process. Face to face meetings are essential, as most design presentations, in particular at the beginning of a project, are nuanced and require explanation and discussion. On most projects, we meet with clients every ten days to two weeks during the design stage. Between face to face meetings, we communication directly through telephone conversations and emails.

Architects & Interior Designers

Architects & Interior Designers

On many projects we collaborate with talented and capable interior designers. We believe that they provide additional depth, skill and expertise that complement our abilities very well. Interior designers, on many of our best projects, partner with us and our clients, from the beginning, in determining the character of the project. A common dividing line, in terms of individual design scope, is determined what is provided, built, or installed by the builder, on our side, and what is provided and installed by the interior designer.

Our Clients

Our Clients

We partner with clients in a dynamic and enriching process in which both parties have complementary responsibilities. We provide creativity, insight and wherewithal while our clients establish goals and provide the resources required to realize them. Through discernment, knowledge, and experience, we provide guidance and expertise in assisting them from project conception to completion.
