Following a lightning strike that destroyed their home, the clients approached MGa to help reimagine a house on their lakefront site.  Using the rough size and location of the previous house as a starting point, this house was designed as a retreat for a brother and sister to spend time relaxing, reading, cooking, and using the lake.  Nestled into its sloping site, its flat roofs allow for maximum ceiling heights while staying below local height restrictions. The layout of the house balances two master bedroom suites, both with spectacular lake views, over a loft-like main living space.  The kitchen’s multi-slide doors push aside opening the space to a pergola-covered patio for a dramatic inside-outside connection, and the orientation of the living room allows one to simultaneously enjoy the fireplace and the view for cozy days spent indoors.

Most of the house’s roofs are covered with a photovoltaic array. Its energy efficiency exceeds Energy Star certification requirements and, pending analysis, the house is a net zero-energy building.
